Poet-MENTOR eDUATOR pOSITION + Internships

 
 

Position Description:

Sacramento Area Youth Speaks (SAYS) is an outreach program of Undergraduate Admissions. The SAYS Director reports to the Executive Director of Undergraduate Admission and works closely with other units in Undergraduate Admissions to serve as an important bridge between the university, schools, and the community.

Are you looking to provide mentorship to youth? Do you enjoy or practice poetry, spoken word or hip-hop? Would you like to get better connected to your community?

Getting involved with SAYS (Sacramento Area Youth Speaks) is the ultimate way to achieve this!

SAYS Interns (SI) are typically UC Davis/Sac State undergraduate students looking to serve alongside SAYS Poet-Mentor Educators (PME) teams inside classrooms, after-schools programs, summer programming, performance spaces, within the community, and beyond!

SAYS Poet-Mentor Educators (PME's) are community-based Teaching Artists/Educators, that transform education through arts, spoken-word, hip-hop and creative literacy approaches. .
 
Sacramento Area Youth Speaks (SAYS) is a social justice movement that empowers youth and transforms education by creating platforms for critical literacy, access to higher education, youth voice and civic engagement.

SAYS Internship opportunities include, deep community outreach including curating events such as poetry slams, writing workshops and open mics. As well as receiving direct in-class experience working with K-12 students in the Greater Sacramento Region. There will also be opportunities to assist with the SAYS Slam Season and other SAYS signature events including the SAYS Summit, Mondavi Center special events, and attend conferences and convening representing SAYS. SAYS Interns work with SAYS Program Coordinators  to foster administrative tasks, and help transcribe our yearly SAYS Anthology.

SAYS is also offers opportunities on the administrative side of the program, including opportunities to collaborate on grant writing, fundraising, community development and grassroots organizing. SAYS also is looking for Interns to help manage our social media and website presence!

SAYS is a great way to get involved with youth and movement building in the greater Sacramento Region.
Job Summary

POSITION INFORMATION:


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Lift supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.

  • Climb flights of stairs at designated school sites.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Some travel, weekend and evening hours expected on an occasional basis.

  • A valid CA driver's license to provide own transportation to sites and events.

  • Position is a mandatory reporter for known or suspected child abuse and requires that a statement acknowledging the requirement to report child abuse be signed.

  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Minimum License/Certification:       

Minimum Education/Experience:           

  • Expertise as a spoken word poet.

  • Experience developing academic curricula and interactive classroom instruction.

  • Experience teaching middle school or high school students in any subject matter and/or experience working in an after-school setting.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Skills to evaluate students' needs and progress.

  • Skills to establish and maintain supportive relationships with multi-ethnic participants from disadvantaged backgrounds.

  • Oral and written English communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:            

  • Portfolio of standards-based poems to inspire students to write.

  • Experience acting as Master of Ceremonies for events.

  • Experience organizing spoken word events/activities.

  • Experience in production (e.g., setting up sound equipment for event).

  • Experience in marketing and publicity.
